Dear Carolyn,
Being a coach leader is a concept that is often misused..."that employee needs a little more coaching." The correct thing to say is "that employee needs a little more training."
When we hear the word coach, we often think of our Little League experience and use it in that context. We recall our childhood, when we had a parent standing over us, telling us how to hold the bat, where to put our feet, how to transfer our weight, and how to keep our eye on the ball. It was all tell, tell, tell. Leadership today invites you to meet many different moments.
Sometimes you need to manage and train and sometimes you need to coach. But by coaching we mean be a BIG LEAGUE COACH! It’s no longer about tell, tell, tell, try this, do that, do it my way. Coach Leadership is about agreeing on a common objective and supporting your 'coachee' (employee) to craft a plan to achieve that objective. It’s about listening, asking questions, and holding others accountable for their ideas, commitments, and processes.
Becoming a strong coach leader means:
- Listening to understand, not to speak or share your past experience.
- Asking powerful, open-ended questions. What would winning look like, what would it feel like, what outcomes are we looking for? How would we measure 'done'?
- Being able to sit in others’ discomfort or uncertainty…Rushing in to mow people’s paths with solutions, resources, and ideas is not coaching and is not sustainable over the long term.
- Holding coachees accountable for their ideas, commitments, and processes. We all have our own way of sabotaging ourselves whether it be a fear of failure, a love of re-inventing the wheel, pleasing others, or seeking perfection. Coach leaders help identify this and support coachees to assess how it is showing up in their day-to-day pursuits.
- Recognizing and celebrating when we achieve those big league wins or those day-to-day outcome wins.
At Better Your Best we believe the first step to becoming a strong coach leader is to know ourselves. It’s the first phase of the leader’s journey.

What does it take to be a leader in the 21st century?
A key thing I see leaders struggle with is being the "key problem solver" in their business/team which leads them to become the bottleneck. Leaders who can slow down and coach their team to find their own solutions will be the ones who succeed over the long haul because their teams will be more engaged, more independent, and most importantly, as leaders they won't become burned out and resentful being the key problem solver all the time. It also instills a coaching culture in the business, which means the people they are leading won't become the bottlenecks either.
